Acoustic Research AW877

Product NameMaking a good thing better was the goal when Audiovox created the Acoustic Research AW877 wireless speakers. These speakers are an update of the solid AW-871 wireless speaker solution.  The AW877 speakers are highlighted by an updated styling with a black glossy finish, and a carrying handle built-in to the speakers for maximum portability.  That portability is fully supported by the fact that you can power the speakers with an AC adapter or 8 C-cell batteries in each speaker.  The batteries typically last somewhere between four and eight hours depending on how loud and in what function you are using the speakers.  As with their predecessor, these speakers operate in the 900MHZ frequency and are rated for about a 250 foot range under ideal conditions.  As with all wireless solutions interference, walls, ceilings, doors, etc. may lower the distance you can expect to get from the transmitter.

Each speaker pumps out about 7.5 watts of power through a 4″ woofer and a 1″ tweeter.  The automatic volume leveling control feature provides an assist to your listening experience and the quality of sound from these speakers does not disappoint despite their diminutive size.  The dimensions for each speaker are 6 3/8″ wide, 10 3/16″ high, and 7 1/8″ deep. Each wireless speaker has its own power, volume, and tuning control, as well as a left/right/mono selector.  You can set the selector to mono if you want to separate the speakers and take them into different rooms.

The transmitter for this system will allow you to connect your music source via a 3.5mm audio jack (like the one on your standard MP3 player), or you can connect using the ubiquitous RCA red and white cables.  There are three channels to choose from on the transmitter within the 900MHZ band so that you can adjust if you have any interference from an old cordless phone or other device that might be causing issues.  The transmitter is small so you can place it most anywhere your audio source.  It does have a rather bright status LED that may bother you if you have the transmitter as part of your home theater setup but you can always use a piece of black electrical tape to resolve that particular issue.
